Massage
Massage during cancer treatment - is it safe?
There is no evidence that massage can spread cancer - cancer is spread through a complex biological process in the body.
There is evidence, however, supporting the many benefits of therapeutic touch for cancer patients throughout their diagnosis, their oncology care, and beyond.
How is it different from a normal massage?
Oncology massage is specifically adapted for people affected by cancer, with careful consideration of treatment side effects and medical needs.
Unlike regular massage, which often focuses on muscle tension and deeper tissue work, oncology massage modifies pressure, techniques, and positioning to prioritise safety, comfort, and overall quality of life.
Therapists trained in OM have the knowledge to adapt treatments based on lymph node involvement, scar tissue, tumour sites, and current treatment side effects.
What are the benefits of Oncology massage?
OM focuses on comfort and nervous system regulation. This kind of massage requires specific training to support the patient in all stages of their journey. By providing safe and supportive care, OM can:
Enhance the quality of life and relaxation
Reduce nausea and anxiety
Reduce fatigue and improve sleep quality
Reduce muscle tension and treatment-related pain
Support body awareness and reconnection
This service is intended as complementary care and should not replace medical treatment or advice from your healthcare provider. Medical clearance from your oncologist or physician is required before beginning massage therapy.
What to expect
Your First Visit
Your initial consultation, either in person or on the phone, includes a brief intake form to see if this is the right care for you. For your first appointment, we will touch base about how you're feeling that day - this ensures your treatment is safe and appropriate for your current condition.
During Your Session
Sessions are 30-60 minutes using oncology-specific massage techniques. All work is adapted to your treatment stage and current health status. You may request modifications at any time.
Adaptions may include temperature, position, duration, pressure, area, and technique selection.
